The growing self-reward phenomenon among Gen Z is now in the spotlight at a financial literacy session held by Bank Neo Commerce (BNC) in collaboration with the Kumpulbaca Community. The online event, held on Sunday (22/6/2025), carried the theme “Manisnya Self-Reward, Pahitnya Dompet Kering: Cerdas Atur Uang di Era FOMO” (in translation: “The Sweetness of Self-Reward, the Bitterness of an Empty Wallet: Smart Money Management in the Era of FOMO),” and aimed to equip young people with relevant financial literacy in this fast-paced era.
Self-Reward: A Form of Self Appreciation That Needs to Be Limited
Self-rewarding or giving yourself a gift can indeed be a form of appreciation for achieving a goal or getting through a tough day. However, if done without careful consideration, it can backfire. Head of Brand Bank Neo Commerce, Yhanuar Purbokusumo, explained that excessive self-reward behavior risks triggering consumer habits and disrupting personal financial stability.
“Although it may seem positive, uncontrolled self-reward can cause someone to lose focus on long-term goals. Expenses can far exceed income, even leading to debt,” he said in the session.
To avoid the trap of a consumerist lifestyle, Yhanuar emphasized the importance of self-control. He encouraged the younger generation to learn to manage their finances healthily, understand priorities, and not be afraid to invest with discipline.
“Self-control is the foundation. If we can control ourselves, we will be wiser in managing our spending and have the courage to build a future through investment,” he explained.
Book Discussion and Financial Literacy Combined
In addition to financial education, this event also included a discussion of the book, ‘Ngomongin Uang, Menjadi Kaya Versi Kamu Sendiri’ (in translation: ‘Talking About Money, Becoming Rich in Your Own Version’) by Glenn Ardi. The discussion was moderated by Sheila Varizki Fitri, Head of Event Kumpulbaca Community.
The Kumpulbaca Community itself has been known as a safe space for book lovers since 2019, with their signature movement, #SejamMembaca. According to Sheila, this collaboration opens up a new space in literacy – not just about reading but also understanding practical values such as money management.
“We are delighted to collaborate with Bank Neo Commerce because the theme resonates with young people. Financial literacy is crucial, and this is a fun way to discuss it,” said Sheila.
BNC’s Commitment to Supporting National Financial Literacy
Bank Neo Commerce not only focuses on digital banking services, but also actively organizes educational activities through community collaborations. These activities are also part of BNC’s support for ‘Gerakan Nasional Cerdas Keuangan (GENCARKAN) 2025’ (in translation: ‘the 2025 National Financial Intelligence Movement’) and the Financial Literacy Month celebrations initiated by the Financial Services Authority (OJK).
“We remain committed to contributing to improving financial literacy and conclusion in Indonesia. We will continue to collaborate like this in various regions and segments of society,” concluded Yhanuar.
